Collin Hodgkinson and Carson Barry each shot under par in the second round of action at the Husky Invitational to lead the Oregon State men's golf team in their 2022-22 opener on Monday.
As a team, the Beavers finished the first 36 holes tied for fifth with an 8-over 584 at the par-72, 5,847-yard Gold Mountain Olympic Course. That's not entirely official, however, as four of the 15 teams at the event were unable to finish their second round of play due to darkness. They'll finish their suspended round Tuesday before the final 18 holes of the invite.
"For the first day of the season, we did a lot of really good things," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "Coming into the season I felt like this team has the potential to compete at a very high level and it showed this afternoon. Overall, we need to keep doing what we are doing and clean up some silly mistakes. We have to take better advantage of the par 5s tomorrow."
Hodgkinson, playing in his first collegiate tournament, tops the Beaver contingent in Bremerton. He shot a 4-under 68 in the final 18 Monday, picking up seven birdies to finish with nine on the day. He birdied five of his first nine holes in the second round, which included a pair of par 5s. Hodgkinson enters the final 18 at 1-over 143.Close behind is Barry, who finished at par over the first 36 holes to place in a tie for ninth. He birdied four of his first nine holes in the second round, and once more over his last nine to take a 2-under 70. He ended the first day of action with eight birdies to help the Beavers to 35 on the day, second only to San Jose State's 38.
Jackson Lake shot a 3-over 75 in the first round, and a 2-over 74 to finish at 5-over for the day. He is tied for 33rd after recording five birdies over the first 36 holes.
Rylan Johnson, making his collegiate debut as well, and Mateo Fuenmayor both enter the final day tied for 37th at 6-over 150. Johnson shot 75 in back-to-back rounds while Fuenmayor completed his day with a 1-over 73 in the final 18. Fuenmayor tallied six birdies to Johnson's six.
Five other Beavers also competed in the Husky Individual Invitational at the par-71, 7,159-yard Gold Mountain Cascade Course. Play was also suspended for a handful of golfers due to darkness. Oregon State's contingent, however, was able to finish.
Sean Kato led the OSU contingent by finishing at par. He shot a 71 in both rounds, totaling four birdies. He is tied for ninth.
Alfred Raja and Nolan Thoroughgood each shot a 3-over 145 to tie for 19th. Each shot a 2-over 73 on the first 18, followed by a 1-over 72 in the final 18. Thoroughgood tallied six birdies on the day, followed by Raja's three.
Brody Marconi is tied for 38th with an 11-over 153, while Brandon Eyre is 40th at 13-over 155.
Play continues Tuesday with the final 18 holes.
