University of Phoenix College of Doctoral Studies Releases Whitepaper Focusing on Pandemic Impacts to Canadian Nurse Workforce
University of Phoenix College of Doctoral Studies announces the release of a whitepaper by Ruben Hernandez Rodriguez, RN, MBA, an associate alum at the Center for Workplace Diversity and Inclusion Research (CWDIR), exploring the impact of workplace stressors and pandemic on nursing shortage in Canadian health care system as well as solutions: “Addressing the Impact of Covid-19 on the Canadian Nursing Shortage.”
“The successful integration of migrating nurses into the Canadian health system requires nurse leaders and system structures that support their integration and welcome the diversity of culture that these nurses bring to practice”
Stating the imperative that the health system address stress and burnout factors and focus on minimizing the number of nurses leaving the healthcare workplace and the nursing profession, Rodriguez also points out the exacerbating factor of a nursing faculty shortage, and examines essential strategies like nursing migration and standardization of aspects such as licensing and compensation.
“The successful integration of migrating nurses into the Canadian health system requires nurse leaders and system structures that support their integration and welcome the diversity of culture that these nurses bring to practice,” Rodriguez states. “Their skills and cultural knowledge can increase the system’s ability to provide cultural care to the remarkably diverse Canadian population.”
Rodriguez was born in Cuba and moved to Toronto, Canada, in 2002. He has earned a Bachelor in Science of Nursing and a Master in Business Administration. Rodriguez has over 10 years in clinical practice, primarily in the emergency department, and nine years of progressive leadership at Humber River Hospital where he serves as Program Director of the Emergency Department.
Rodriguez is currently enrolled in the College’s Doctorate of Health Administration program, and his dissertation work is focusing on the impact of nursing leaders’ competency level in patients' outcomes in long-term care.
