During today’s Board meeting, the Benton County Board of Commissioners were informed that Valley Landfills, Inc./Republic Services, Inc., has withdrawn its appeal of the Planning Commission’s denial of the conditional use permit application for the Coffin Butte Landfill. The withdrawal was effective on Friday, March 11, 2022. A letter addressed to the Community Development Department announced Republic Services’ intention to file a new application in the near future and to continue to engage with the community and incorporate their feedback.
“Coffin Butte Landfill is an extremely important asset to our community,” said Board Chair, Nancy Wyse. “My fellow commissioners and I were very pleased to hear that Republic is utilizing this opportunity to take more time to reengage with our community to help shape a more constructive path for the future of solid waste.”
Before announcing the withdrawal of the appeal, the Community Development Department had expected the appeal hearings process to resume Monday, March 21, 2022, which marked the end of Republic’s earlier requested 90-day “time out”. On December 21, 2021, Republic Services filed an appeal of the Planning Commission’s decision and requested a 90-day pause in the land use hearing and appeal process. Going forward, the public can expect to engage in listening and community feedback sessions before Republic Services submits any new application to expand the Coffin Butte Landfill.
