Morgan Howey hit a two-run home run to secure Oregon State softball’s 9-6 victory over San Diego on March 27 at Kelly Field. The Beavers started their West Coast Conference schedule with this win, moving to a record of 1-0 in conference play.
The game began with a strong offensive showing from Oregon State, who scored five runs in the first inning. Howey and Madison Weir each contributed RBI doubles, accounting for four of those runs. Mya Harrison added another by grounding out to shortstop, bringing Lici Campbell home from third base.
Howey finished the game going two-for-four at bat, including her sixth home run and twenty-first run batted in for the season—both career highs for her. Weir was one-for-three with two RBIs, while Harrison went one-for-four and stole a base.
San Diego managed to score once in the second inning but could not catch up as Oregon State continued its offensive output. In the third inning, Camrynn Gordon and Jada Lewis hit consecutive RBI singles that increased the lead. Lewis ended two-for-four with an RBI and stolen base; Gordon was one-for-three with a stolen base as well.
Campbell reached base three times with one hit and two walks, setting up Howey’s decisive home run in the sixth inning. Paige Bambarger contributed by getting on base twice and scoring on Weir’s double early in the game.
Bailey Murray made her eighth start of the season for Oregon State, striking out five batters over four-and-two-thirds innings before Haydn Milley closed out the final two innings for a save. With this result, Oregon State improves its overall record to 13-22 ahead of upcoming games against San Diego scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at noon.
