Four Oregon State University wrestlers won their first-round matches at the NCAA Championships on Mar. 19 in Cleveland, Ohio. Maximo Renteria (125 pounds), Nash Singleton (141), Daschle Lamer (174), and Justin Rademacher (197) each secured victories in their opening bouts.
The event is significant for Oregon State as it highlights the performance of its athletes on a national stage. All four wrestlers will continue competing in the consolation brackets after losses later in the day.
Singleton, ranked 24th, achieved an upset by defeating ninth-seeded Joey Olivieri from Nebraska with a score of 2-1, clinching the win with an escape late in the third period. Lamer also recorded an upset victory over Carter Baer of Binghamton, who was seeded 13th, winning 2-0. Rademacher, seeded sixth at 197 pounds, won his match against No. 27 Gabe Arnold from Iowa in triple overtime by a score of 3-2. Renteria, ranked ninth at 125 pounds, edged out Ayden Smith of Rutgers with an 8-7 decision.
Other Oregon State competitors included Gabe Whisenhunt (133) and Matthew Olguin (165). Both lost their two matches and were eliminated from the tournament.
Session III of the championships will be broadcast primarily on ESPN+ and ESPNU starting at 9 a.m. PT Friday.
